Comparing Car Insurance Plans

When comparing car insurance plans, there are few key items you should be on the lookout for. There are typically two basic types of car insurance, Collision and Liability. Each of these types usually starts out at a standard coverage, and you can pay more for additional coverage. For instance, $100,000 bodily injury liability is fairly common, but you can pay for additional coverage up to a certain amount. Before you start comparing plans, ask yourself the following questions:

How much liability insurance do I want from my car insurance?

Liability car insurance is very important in that it covers damages you do to others, as well as lawsuits resulting there from. Since medical costs can be tremendous, as well as the costs resulting from a lawsuit, it may be worth your while to pay a little extra to get additional coverage. After all, $100,000 doesn't really seem like that much if someone's suing you for $500,000.

How much is my vehicle worth? Is it worth extra car insurance premiums?

If you get into a car accident, the car insurance companies probably won't pay more than Blue Book price for your vehicle. If you're considering getting collision car insurance, decided whether the extra cost in premiums is going to be worth it if your vehicle is heavily damaged in an accident. Also, if your car is damaged, are you the type of person that is more likely to get it fixed than you are to trash it and get a new one? If so, keep in mind that you car insurance will still only pay what your car is worth according to a Blue Book rather than what you think it's worth.

Now it's Time to Compare Car Insurance Plans

Since almost all car insurance companies offer the same kinds of benefits, just with different pricing, it's important to figure out what your car insurance plan is going to look like before comparing offers. That way, you can tell the insurance agents exactly what kind of coverage you want. Most of the time, when a car insurance company gives you a quote, they will give you the lowest possible premium rate, with the least possible coverage, just to sound as affordable as possible.

Compare the Car Insurance Company's Customer Service

Besides price, customer service is the most important aspect to consider when comparing plans from different car insurance companies. Remember that if you get into an accident, you will be having to deal with your car insurance agent quite a bit before the situation is resolved. Does it seem like they are on your side, and that if problems arise that they will try to win things in your favor? Also, do they seem trustworthy? An agent might try to sneak in some extra, unneeded benefits (at extra cost) into your car insurance plan if they think you won't notice, so it's important to get a good feel for their approach to people.
